ZDNet Australia's Broadband Speed Test measures the data throughput between a computer and a geographic distributed network of servers to calculate how fast broadband speeds are in the real world. The results are not an indication of the actual line speed between the user and the ISP. There are many external factors such as network congestion and routing between multiple networks that can affect individual results, which means the broadband speed test does not necessarily warrant 100% accuracy.

Due to the heavy noise on my telephone line my drop out rate yesterday was 652. Very annoying to say the least, so much so I have had to drop my level of compliance and I am getting less than 1mg download and up load of 108kbts. How the hell do you get rid of the noise levels. Any suggestions

The Telstra ADSL2+ is GARBAGE !!!!! I (allegedly) have a 20Mbps service. I tested it two minutes go, and it was 5.2Mbps down. this is at 2:45pm on a weekday afternoon. Fairly shortly it will get WORSE than that as the school kids start to get on.
I have complained to Telstra but they make the excuse that the lines are busy -- SO WHAT !!!!!! they charge me for a 20M service then give me a 4-5M service. They are ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC.

SteveZSteveZ March 20th, 2012
Report offensive content Reply

The issue could be your phone lines. I work in a local ISP in my area, and what ADSL 2+ is, is a minimum of 1.5Mbps, and a maximum of 24Mbps, however this depends on how far you live from the exchange. You will not get 20Mbps if you live 4km from the exchange. Also, line quality also plays a major part.

Wan't to winge??? we have the "state of the art" rural broadband satellite, you know, so every one has braodband. That was one of Julia's things. I took me, just now, 2.5 minutes to download the speed test site. AND we have been getting a whopping 16 to 21 KBS not MBS. It obviously has to be so slow because of global warming, or rain or something else that can hide in the sky....and all for $90.00pm

I just got cable connected via Big Pond. I am getting a speed of 131Mb/s in Adelaide....for $50 per month. I'm really pleased with it because on their previous plan I was only getting 2Mb/s with ADSL2, for $70 per month. If cable runs down your street....that's the way to go! (29/12/11)

Telstra are a bunch of crapsters. We have had nothing but issue issue after issue - had to downgrade everything due to ill health and having to retire... instead of deleting the old plan they had us on TWO plans and charged us for both ... long winded story and probably common, but to put a long story short I really would like to know if anyone has any ideas about the following... ok a bot over a year ago we were on a 12GB plan and by the end of the month we would have used maybe 6 or 7 GB - that's using facebook ans youtube daily for hours... now when we downgraded to the very small 5GB we were using that in two weeks - and this is without using youtube and not letting the kids play online games because I know it uses a fair bit of the limit. We had to go up to 200GB (seemed like a better deal - well they are trained to make you believe that right? ) and it hasn't been slowed to dial up speed ... and won't be - the outcome with all the telstra BS is that I made a phone call "hello, Optus? we would like to bring our home phone and internet over please, thank you" now we will have a 500GB limit and all sorts of stuff for less than Telstra could offer. We already have two mobile phones with Optus so it seemed only right.

anyways, sorry to babb;e it's still a bit raw and getting it off my chest is probably ok butmaybe not here, so I do apologise ... and I would greatly appreciate any ideas or answers to my Q that was in that babb;e somewhere :-/

Hi everyone,
Im very interested in the debate here about Australian broadband and its speeds in comparision to New Zealand etc. Something everyone seems to be forgetting is the size of Australia. People, its one of the largest countries on the planet, and it also has one of the most spread out populations on the planet. The size means that we (Australia) need to rely heavily on wireless internet, which depending on your ISP can be woefully slow, or unusually fast for wireless. As for cable or ADSL in the cities, of which I live (Sydney) it all depends on your carrier. Im with Optus and my intenet download speed can be as fast as 2mbps. When people compare New Zealand with Australia's intenet network its not really fair because NZ is as developed as Australia while being a very, very, very small and unimportant country (NSW alone is bigger).

I have been involved with ADSL for over 10 years now, installing and fault restoration. In my experience i believe at least 60 to 70 percent of the faults i attend are due to either internal wiring problems, faulty or missing filters on phone or voice frequency equipment or modem issues. My recommendations, the ideal setup is to have a central filter/splitter installed at the Telstra "point of entry" (where your incoming cable from the street connects to your premises, have a " fixed" acma approved dedicated cable from the central filter/splitter to your adsl modem! A central filter/splitter is also essential if you have a monitored security system installed within your premises. This will then eliminate most internal wiring issues. At the very least, adsl2+ in-line filters are required to be installed on every single phone device that connects to a phone socket, including faxes, answering machines, foxtel set top boxes, external ringing devices, wireless adapters connected to phone sockets, etc. The copper network isn't as bad as what some may think!

dave79dave79 July 6th, 2011
Report offensive content Reply

Gotta agree.
For our Burnie, Tas. internet, we have a 1.5MB download speed adls connection through exetel using testra copper line.
ADSL2+ line filter, netcom nb6 modem and belkin 34ee wireless router which supplies our internet in-house to a pc, laptop and ASUS tablet. All devices get consistant 1.2MB -1.3MB download speeds at all times, so we have nothing to complain about.
The best thing we ever did was switch over our phone and internet to Exetel.

I am with iprimus, and am supposed to get 1500kbps. I have never had this; and two days ago, I was down to 529kbps. I phoned and complained, and the guy who wouldn't give his name, [ obviously felt I wouldn't be able to pronounce it correctly (!!) or wouldn't understand what he was saying ] said hold on, and came back and said I have increased your speed, let me know in two days or two hours, I couldn't tell which, how it goes. I checked my speed again and it was 5828 kbps. amazing how easy it is to do, just a matter of switchiong me back on after being a random customer that had his speed slowed right down so that I don't download so much in time, which means they, ISP, don't have to pay Telstra so much for downloads. Bloody Telstra have the monopoly in this country, which seems to control all internet. I live 41 kms from Brisbnane

In relation to above, we have given Telstra 7 days to correct the issue.
We have entered a contract as a business user and are not achieving the speeds required for business use or requirements.
As a result, we will be lodging a class grievance with the Ombudsman, ACCC, and demanding financial compensation through the Small Claims Tribunal. ( Victoria)
(Deceptive Conduct, misrepresentation of performance are only 2 of the issues to be addressed)
The Telstra Next G Ultimate devices are not cheap for Business and one would expect a higher level of service and performance.

I agree with some other posters, that it is not always the isp causing slow download speeds.
If you have a good cable connection to the home router, and use wireless to access the router from another room in the house - you can serverly limit max speed. As stated cordless phones that have frequency that conflicts with the wireless frequencies will limit the speed. The best test is plug the cable into the pc directly for testing speed, then test via your normal wireless arrangements. Multiple pcs connected to router via wireless limit the speed experienced. Live in a steel frame house or have concrete reinforced floors between router and wireless pc - can badly affect speed and connection quality.
Finaly, you can have a great connection speed to the local exchange, but if the website you are accessing is feeding you a slow stream because of cost saving or being heavily loaded - you experience a slow connection - it's like the connection to your house from upsteam is a wide river - and someone is pissing in the river upstream, the download data will appear very slow.
Isps also limit your speed below what the hardware can deliver - I can get 5 or 10mbit from this test server, but if i use a download manager to download a file from a website by opening up 10 simulatious connections to a site, I can get speeds of 20mbits or more.
The simple facts of technology limit speed. Internet via wireless to the home (ie via phone networks) is limited by the number of users fed simultaneously off the nearest antenna. I think 1mbit/s consistent speed is good in this case. ADSL etc is fed through the phone wire to the home (ie not cable) and speed is limited by physics and decreases quickly with line distance from the exchange. You may be 500m from the exchange by how the crow flies, but the cable runs up and down and around the hill to get to you may be 3 or 4km long. More than 5km is too far for ADSL to deliver reasonable speed. ADSL also suffers from radio interference - so if a radio transmitter tower is near you it will result in poor performance.
Even the TV cable based internet is limited by how heavily people are using the cable in your area to watch movies - the cable capacity is shared with pay TV users.

From reading comments, I gather that some routers or cable modems may report how much bandwidth speed is available to the local exchange. Can anyone suggest usefull speed and bandwidth monitoring software that can provide logs of how good your internet connection has performed over time - ie constant logging of response to your browser requesting page downloads etc?

Things i hate about most browsers:eg firefox, opera, etc
When you open the last browser session on starting browser and it displays all the tabs - it insists on reloading all tabs rather than using cache, it does not have a setting to prevent this or just load from cache on startup. You cant stop all tabs reloading. Also if there are tabs on pages with streaming video like youtube etc - the video starts streaming automatically on many tabs simultaneously - what the f is the point of this! You get multiple jumbled audio coming from the speaker! I dont want any content loading until i select the tab. Is this too f obvious a feature for a browser to have?
Suggestions anyone?

It's sad but Australia internet sux, wasn't it like 53rd in the world in 2010.

Thing is your connection to your isp may be fast in Australia. But the second it leaves Australia it's slow as fk. Do a speedtest to a server in the US or Europe or even Asia.

You might see your 20mb connection drop to 1-2mb/s.

So what use is all this high broadband speed when just about everything you want in not located in Australia.

Wow looking at some of the speeds people are getting I'm doing better than I thought. SE suburbs Melbourne - Virgin (Optus network) mobile broadband mifi, the kids just got out of school and clogged the network but I'm still getting 2200 kbs.
I gave up on Vodafone after three months spending more time trying to connect to the Internet than actually using it, though it works fine (7200 kbs) for the friend I gave it to who lives near the CBD.
PS. Anyone with Windows 7 (esp. 64 bit) using Virgin Mobile Broadband with USB modem should try running the program in compatability mode for Windows Vista. Windows 7 sees Virgin software as obsolete. It seemed to help me get a better connection.
I'm probably going to return this modem and go with Telstra now they've dropped their previously scandalous prices. How did it take them so long to realise that they've dropped countless customers during the period they charged too much? $2 million a year for a moron CEO who doesn't understand basic principles of business! While these speeds are usually ok for browsing news sites, etc., when using Skype for a video call overseas it is barely adequate, and frequently drops out. Same with trying to play some on-line games, frequent freeze-ups and loss of connection.

So Mr Turnbull's comments are totally out of touch with those of us who are embracing the internet age. I don't download videos etc., but I do like to keep in touch with my family overseas. There is nothing like talking face-to-face with someone to keep in touch.
Even though I am in my early 60's, I love having the internet. So Mr Turnbull, wake up to reality or you will find yourself consigned to the political wilderness for evermore.

Can someone tell me something!!! I just move to Caroline Springs. Joined Telstra and have been getting the run around since the first day.

The funny thing the Internet connection is so slow that it just pissed me off. At one time my download speed was at 30kb/s on a ADLS 2. Now I only live 20kms from the Melbourne CBD.

VIRGIN WIRELESS BROADBAND - averages 2-3 minutes to download a simple webpage.

Speed test shows a range of 37 - 89 kbps (65 kbps average)

It didn't finish as my connection wouldn't hold long enough to complete.
NEVER GET VIRGIN WIRELESS BROADBAND - it is a rip off & there customer service is non existant!!!

Hi Syd... Hope you are enjoying your trip (although you're spending all that money OS which could be spent here...LOL)!

Seems you missed all the ferocious weather in Qld!

Yeah TLS had a healthy 2.5% rise on friday... my guess as a non-shareholder? Feb 10 is the date of Telstra's interim results. It's also being speculated that Telstra would like to have an announcement re:the NBN, to coincide, with these results.

So imo, either investors are speculating the NBN deal to be formerly announced (for taking to shareholders to vote on) or thinking perhaps for better than expected results. Maybe even results in line with forecasts, may be good enough, considering the current bargain price of TLS and the dividend which is soon due.

Again, imo... If either of these scenarios are correct, there may be more upside! However, if both prove to be wrong, they will drop again!

Try this one. New Telstra Business broadband for work. We test it before making it live ... yes COMPLETELY isolated (refer below). Modem tells me > 14000 download. Great. Test it with Ozspeedtest Optus mirror: hmmm 270kbsec. WTF?? Same test on my current 8000 service gets 596kbsec. Ring Telstra. good response, 2 techs arive after exchange work. Nope, not the line it the modem. They demonstrate massive download speeds with their modem from their test download site. hmmmmm, thinks me. Something is wrong. I show them a download from Microsoft (Office 2007 sp2) and ... whamo ... 272kbsec. Show them the same on my current service: 720kbsec. Heads are scratched. We then reattach the "bad" modem and do a test from other sites. Suprise suprise fast speeds. Which begs the question - why pitiful download speeds through Telstra from Microsoft (of ALL sites)?
If I was a casual observer I would suggest that something is wrong!

@telstra only services melbourne with their 100mbps but optus cable also works in sydney at that speed if you pay an extra $20/month on top of your normal cable package. I am not sure where else the optus cable works at that speed. Though the standard cable speeds seem to fluctuate between 8-17mbps - normal would be around 14.

In Australia you might get blindingly fast speeds but you get something stupid like 20Mb of data and pay through the nose for it. In Australia the telecommunication companies rip everyone off by overcharging. In NZ with vodafone(mobile) you get 10Mb data/day for $1 and then pay $1 for each Mb after. NZ can phone me(landline)for 2hrs for the same cost that I can call there for 1/2 hr. Even internet charges are better value. Considering that there is only just over 4million people in NZ, about the same as in Melbourne.

Answer to Spishek. $2000 to $3000 .................bugger! Oh well I will just contact Stephen Conroy and ask him to pay my share out of what I should have received when they sold Telstra for $49 billion - I think they will still probably owe me some money!

AnyborAnybor November 20th, 2010

@spishek: It depends on from what angle you look at it. Just recently I read that ASIO receives about $ 1.4 billion out of an annual budget of $ 4 billion. That is 535% of their budget before 9/11. ASIS enjoyed a budget increase of 344% and the Office of National Assessment (ONA) received a 443% bonus over the same period. Have you seen any account of what they did with that money? Wouldn't you be interested, how much your family pays annually for supporting a group of spooks, who don't have to account what they spent the money on? They claim that this is to prevent Australia from Terrorism. The risk of being a victim of a terrorist attack in Australia is 33 million to one, compared against being killed in a car accident, which is 15,000 to one. This claim is made by Dr Michaelsen from University of New South Wales. You can read about this in the latest Monthly (November 2010). And coming back to your initial question, indeed I would be happy to spend the money, because it is a long term investment that is to the benefit of both the Australian community and society and at least I know where my money goes.

I live in Doncaster, Eastern sunburbs of Melbourne, Australia. I pay $ 50 for a deal they call DSL Direct. Over last weeks the connection has slowed down to what feels like a 56K Modem. Right now the line speed is 3.32 Mbps. Only about ten minutes ago it was 1.4 Mbps. This is an Optus DSL Direct connection and I have to rely on the service to do my online studies after work. Yesterday the service dropped out completely and it was not back until about 5.30pm today (Nov. 18th, 2010). Sorry to say, but I feel ripped off. Internet should be for free, the way it was planned by Tim Berners-Lee. The problem is I don't feel that the other providers are any better. Each of them has about 200 different plans to choose from with about 50 options each. But in the end you pay for slow connections and no service at all. Waiting on the telephone for over 20 minutes just to make your enquiry is a joke. I feel sorry for those who get the venting from frustrated customers and even worse for customers wanted to make a simple enquiry and got angry simply for waiting. It's amazing what telecom can get a way with nowadays.

I have a pretty zippy computer (an iMac Intel Core i5 Processor Speed 2.8GHz) and use a BoB modem. Because I live about 300 metres from the exchange (I can actually see the building from my house) I would expect to get reasonable service - I pay $69.95 a month for ADSL1 Home Services for 50Gb. Judging from the previous comments, I don't think I am too badly off but if this is the best Australia can do - all I can say is hurry up and bring on the NBN. It would be interesting to know what the speeds are at Scottsdale, Smithton and Midway Point where the NBN has already been rolled out

Average of three tests: 4,438 kbps (downstream)
ADSL2+ Modem reports data Rate: 5467 / 876 kbps
(ADSL_2plus, Annex A, Maximum of 24 Mbps downstream).

Test proves that packet switched networking is only as fast as the weakest link.

It might be viable to take a few averages (say three) over a few days (say a week).

I live on the Gold Coast, Australia's 6th largest city and the fastest growing. People moving to live in the corridor between GC and Brisbane should know they will likely only be offered dialup as there is no capacity.

I live in an area over-run with RIMs, most of these RIMS are fully deployed according to adslexchanges.com.au. That means 50 connections to one RIM and then backhaul to exchange. The connectsions are rationed to the 50 users and if all or most connect at once, the rationing is severe. When I moved here my ADSL bandwidth was 4000-5000kbps, now 4yrs later it is 200-300 yet I pay the same amount for a suppsoed 8000k connection (granted I get more DL limit but I cannot DL that amount anyway at the speeds I get). I use iiNet. They have tried hard to fix it but Telstra just says its "congestion" and not a fault and do nothing but close my case. In fact they have forbidden iiNet to lodge a fault if congestion is the issue! The congestion used to be for 30mins in peak time, now it is ALL the time. They are supposed to give me 1500k minimum but I never see that anymore. And the real issue is no-one cares.

Telstra will not fix its infrastructure now the NBN is being rolled out and there is no legislation to make it do so. The ACCC and Ombudsmen just provide platitudes and tell you they are so sorry. The NBN is a political football so politicians see only their own agendas and not an opportunity to right a wrong. And I am FAR from the only person affected by this. Only political and media pressure can make telstra fix the problems it has created and is taking our money to provide. Get onto to your local member - it may be the only way.

I have registered a complaint with the TIO, who have informed me that until the average line speed falls below 110kpbs (regardless of what you are paying for), the ISP does not have to do anything about their service to you. I am with Bigpond, and on the 8,000kpbs service, but I average 180-220kpbs less than 3% of the maximum speed stated.

It is also worth noting that Telstra pro-actively seek new users on already over congested exchanges without investing in upgrading the equipment. T-Hub, Bigpond movies etc all seem to chew up bandwidth, but are actively marketed to congested areas.

So I guess for the next 5-6 years until the NBN is rolled out, we can all expect deteriorating service and line speed from Bigpond. Even the new wireless "Elite" braodband will suffer the same bandwidth issues as new users sign on, so they too will be getting sb 300kbps line speed. On ya Telstra !!!

I m with TPG ADSL+2 25000kbps 120GB for $49 per month plan.
The speed according to ADSL+2 Router in the status tab is currently
DSL Speed (DS/US) 3806/1020 kbps and this is the actual speed from the exchange to my house. Now there are are other factors that may and in my case slow down the connection more till it reaches the modem, like old telephone wires etc.
The test here today was 3160 kbps which is pretty close to the router's status, however 2 days ago I was getting speeds around 600 kbps. What I did was pull all the plugs and connections out and back in several times and that did the trick. I m back to normal speeds again. You should try it as the connections get corrosion and dirt with time that effect speed.

By the way, TPG's customer service sucks. You waiting on the phone for ages for someone to answer and when they do you speak to someone from India or wherever, that after you explain what the problem is they want to transfer you to a different department but they actually hang up on you so you have to do it all over again! Usually takes over an hour to just explain the issue.

2521, about what I expected being reliant as almost everyone on Telstra copper wire network fom the DarkAges.
Interesting so many are paying for 20000mbps and only getting less than 5000mbps. Do you realise that if Telstra or any ISP promises you a certain spee and you get significantly less then you have ground to take them to court? When I was with Telstra they sold me a 20000mbps connection and I only got approx 3000kbps. I started proceedings to take them to court for committing fraud, false advertising + overcharging. There was a lot of crap to deal with but before it went to court they decide to Cancell my contract and actually refunded the money paid over the previous 12months. I then found out that they do not have to pay refunds for up to 12 months even if you have made double payments on a bill due to pressure from their debt collect processes. I kicked up one hell of a stink and got my money back in 14 days!!! My advise to everyone is: Do not accept bad service, failure to deliver what you are paying for, Frau - particularly when they sell you a product which is (and they know) impossible for them to deliver. Protest!! Start legal proceedings, contact your MP, contact the Telecommunications Omnibusman and generally make such a nuisance of your self that it is costing them more than the fees you are paying. They will cave in when they realise you are not going away! Be persistant, do not give up.

A least Telstra business are on the ball and investigating why I'm only getting 200-300kps on average and why wireless connection keeps dropping out.

Why do it every hour? when the speed should be stable once your ADSL, ADSL2 or ADSL2+ modem is connected to your ISPS Router and or Hub..

Most modems should say connected for several days or more, so all you need is to source your modems connection details after a reconnection has been made..

Ive had nothing but trouble with Telstra the past 2 years. I even changed address and had the stinging crap connections.

Im currently on an 8mbps service - the fastest available standard dsl, as adsl2/2+ not yet available to me. At this new address since April and my speeds averaged a pitiful 50kbps, thats average, so yeah sometimes equivalent of 56k dial up speeds.

I complained and complained and complained. Nothing ever happened. I went through the same process over and over. Stupid call centre - Even though I tell them 1 million times Ive called regarding this issue, heres a ref no. Still want to take me through the same process.

That was it. I finally rang telstra and demanded a discount on my service. They agreed.

Two weeks later a miracle. One thursday night my connection drops out whilst im using skype to a client in the US. My connection wouldnt resync and I had to call the client on my telstra phone (for which I paid a premium to do). Woke up the next day, service is back. Its been 4 weeks now, my dl speeds are 6.7mbps every time I test (what it should be on an 8mbps service). It never gets slower. I still dont know what happened at my exchange, but something was fixed.

I live in rural australia with satellite connection through Bordernet. it was best I could get nearly three years ago, now it's rubbish. I pay for 512 bps and I'm lucky to get 375. I can upgrade 'and up-pay' for 1024. I wonder what that will turn out to be. If I want a higher speed I have to pay for new modem and dish realignment. anybody else on a satellite connection and what sort of service and speed are you getting/

It is a bit unfair to blame service providers when this test engine is on a "slow" connection.
My ISP and AARNET gives me my full ASDL2 speed when I am doing file transfers.

I have been reading these comments for some time and feel concerned that so many have speed issues that may not be the fault of the ISP at all.
I have had a lot of experience setting up my home office, and lots of speed problems, which i have resolved. None by the way turned out to be ISP related.
Firstly I have Big Pond Cable, which is fast. But my intial router which I just replaced with a N standard Belkin was the first problem. It is direct wired to the server and gave at most 15000kpbs. The new one gave 30,000 right away, just old firmware and technology, so using a new router is the way to go, or do a firmware update on the old one.
Now then I have 5 notebooks on the router via wireless and this was the nightmare, I kept getting up and down results and the best was around 5000. Problem was twofold. 1. speed is dependant on signal strength which correlates to distance from router. Whan I moved into the same room wireless speed was same as direct attach. but some offices with only 1 or 2 bars of signal strength were back to 5000 or even less with the new router. If you have this problem buy an expensive router with multiple antenna etc. That fixes it. Just realise that distance in wireless will limit speed and that wireless is unlikely to give you top speed
Other problem was our telephone sytem. We use cordless DECT at 2.4MHz like everyone else, Dont do it, you must use 5.8Mhz phones. This change fixed all the weird results like drop outs re boots etc.
Now all is red hot and Telstra never got a mention, they were not the problem

Speed tests are great, but if you really want to know how much your being ripped off by, then what you need to do is, Look at your ADSL Modems connection..

Dont read the hype and BS found on the web.. As your modem should connect at what has been promised, and any connection less than promised is in fact a connection that has been throttled down, via connecting to many modems to an available Router at your local Substation for your localality..
Anyway, if your ISP is doing the right thing,
For an ADSL2+ "aka G.992.5 annex A" connection - It should typically be around "Up/Down" = "1000Kbps/24000kbps" no if and no butts!..
Connections exhibited by your modem with figures less than the above shows you are being robbed as your in fact sharing YOUR ADSL2+ with another modem if your conection is around half or less, For example - if your modems connection is around 8 Mbps then you are sharing YOUR ADSL2+ with two other Modems "three including yours" on the same connection to a 24 Mbps..

And if I were you - I would take screen shots of your modems connections and refer the matter to the telecommunications ombudsman, because this is not on!..

ENOUGH is ENOUGH!

THIS COULD SAVE YOU $$$$ no bull i no its alot to read but trust me it .ay help u or some 1 u know
im with optus on ADSL2+ in brisbane where im getting a line speed of 283kbps which is the best ive ever gotten, yesterdays results at 4:30pm on ozspeedtest were 44kbps for line speed and a download speed of 0.01MB/s. which is suposed to be up to 24000kbps!
I spent 3 hours on the phone to optus which the first 2 were trouble shooting and optus finding every possible way to blame me for the problem (even though all of the troubleshooting did not make a difference to the speed) where i then spoke to the supervisor who still insisted that it had to be my fault and not theirs (i have a month old laptop with a modem that was provided from optus (netgear) when i signed up)
where i then spoke to a senior supervisor who told me that there was a cabeling problem at the exchange ( which is 5/10 mins max drive up the road) and that ADSL2+ was not available in my area and had been down since the 10th of august 2009 .. FUNNY THAT isnt it since i signed up with optus by a door to door sales person in november of 2009!!! if my memory serves me right november comes after august and the past 6months i have been paying $99 a month for ADSL2+ (ozspeedtest graph shows im getting DIAL UP SPEEDS )
when they new darn well my area couldnt even get it!!!
i have been refunded over $300 for the internet for the past 6 months and told that the problem will be fixed by end of may ....( yeah right!) and that if it is not fixed by end of may i can cancel my contract with no fees..
i asked if any one else had been refunded were i was told 35 to 40 ppl have been refunded that have called about the problem to which i then asked if they were going to contact any one in my area that is paying for ADSL2+ and unaware of the cabeling problem and that they were not getting ADSL2+ to make them aware and give them a refund aswell to which i was given a straight out NO.
so if u are getting really bad speeds like i am it really does pay to check it out and dont just let them tell u its ur fault or assume its just because its peak time DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT dont let the big guys take ur money and not give u what ur paying for u wouldnt pay for a family meal deal at maccas and walk away with only a small fries would u? so dont let them bully u into thinking its ur fault when its not stand up for ur self and if they hang up on u keep calling back u never no u just might end up with hundreds of $$$ back just like i did ..
i have taken my story to the ACCC (who will hopefully do something about it ) to ACA who will be getting back to me and to my local paper if u have a similar story please at least take it to ACCC - australian competition and consumer commission ( it only took 15mins of my time on the phone) the more people who report it the more likely it is they will do a full blown investigation into these sorts of things with telecommunications industry. im just really hoping that the average aussie like me are not ripped off and scammed and know about these issues and can get their money back so check ur speed if its slow question it and get the word out becuse i am not the only person this has happened to its happening with telstra to so who knows what other retailers are doing the same thing and they are not willing to call u and let u know u need to call them !!! sorry i rambled on so much it just really P**es me off that they are trying to get away with it . let me no what u guys think about this issue and any ideas what else i could try to do to get those unsuspecting innocent ppl a refund.

Your info is all fine and dandy for people who are with telstra or optus, but you need to understand how difficult it is for people on the "budget ISP's" like iinet, dodo and exetel to really get something done about the problems.

I myself recently changed from a 8mbps/384kbps connection where I was getting 7600/382 of the connection which was damn good (adsl1 Max) with no drop outs or the like. Then I started getting all sorts of weird charges coming out of no where that took 3 days, 12 email's and 3 hrs on the phone to get taken off. I then changed to adsl2+ (theo 24/1mbps) which line tests said id get between 13-16 mbps download and 900 kbps upload which I would be happy with. This evening I got a grand total of 600kbs.. And then it went down to 50 kbps.. So slower than dial up. I did these tests in isolation and ive been assured that my full service will come into action on the 1st or second of this month. I **** hope it does, because all the censoring in the world wont stop me.

If you email these guys, they don't respond. If you call them you spend hours on the phone until you are promised that you will be called or emailed back (which rarely happens) If the ISP has a forum and you write on it, theres a decent chance that the budget ISP will wait till your contract is over and boot you as a "problem customer" and for giving them bad press.

If you go to the TIO (telecommunications ombudsman) your ISP will find every way it can to legally sever you from their service. Is this criminal? YES! But it is the way the world works..

There is only one way that stuff can truly be done. I know it sounds ludicrous compared to world hunger, wars, ETS etc.. But we need to get thousands of people to rally down in Canberra and refuse to pay ALL ISP's a single red cent until the problems with the exchanges, the line quality (some of that copper is so damn corroded that a bug walking on it makes it short ffs) and to develop technologies to eliminate magnetic interference/water problems. As for the NBN fiber to premises is the only way to go. I bloody hate the labor government but Mr abbot wants to eliminate F2P and bring in Fiber to node which uses the same **** up useless infrastructure we have now.

People stand the **** up and fight the power!!

Hi frog100, I'd say you are doing it right...

You press the button, at home, or work etc and what comes up on the read out meter, is your speed. If your read out says 26533, then that is your speed.

With such speed, you must be with the fastest Telstra option, BigPond cable elite, which gives you up to 30000 (so I believe). Being so, you are obviously in a bigger city (as cable isn't available everywhere) but you are obtaining almost top speed.

This makes you one of the lucky ones, as not many can claim to be in your situation...

I am with Telstra too (ADSL) and have not had too many issues either, although it is common to click/type in a URL and it isn't found and I have to "try again" (which has really only been a problem in 2010, not before).

I just did a speed test again and got my slowest yet 1261. Previously I was getting around 1290. But my plan is 1500 plan so I am doing ok, under the circumstances, I suppose.

RSRS April 11th, 2010

Guys ADDL2+ speed is determined primarily by the "wire" distance you are from the exchange. speeds are from 24 mbps (close ) to 1 mbps at 5Km from exchange.
I have an Internode graph showing expected speeds/ against wire distance from the exchange
Not that "wire" distance is not necessarily road distance. In my case its pretty close coz I measured it both ways. Once you know the distance, report slow speeds as it "Encourages" ISPs to improve things.

32000. With www.speedtest.net I've hit around 36,000 but that pretty much caps it out. I'm with Telstra, although these speeds don't really help that much. They're good if you're downloading from somewhere like iTunes, multiple downloads, games (e.g Steam) where you're downloading large items and from decent sites.

Unfortunately with most sites you're capped by their upload rather than your download.

And I'm with Telstra, they're really not that bad :P

hey people just want to make sure that all you broadband users getting slow speeds have read all the small print. I did and found out that i was guaranteed 1500 kpbs minimum. As i was getting around 200kpbs i called optus and refused to pay bill until it reached 1500 regularly. They agreed. Funny how quicky a problem is fixed when u stop paying. I get 8000ish now.

I am with Telstra Big Pond, and over the last six months, my internet will be coasting along nicely, then all of a sudden my speed will suddenly drop out so that i cannot encode fast enough to broadcast my online radio show, it was happening around 11.25-11.30am daily now its starting as early as 8am and consistantly happens throughout the day, i believe i am offline more than online and for this fabulous privelidge i pay $90 a month. weve had Big Pond Techs out who have checked the pit and line in from the street, ive paid my pc tech to check my pc and router etc and both say its BIG POND, as I am leaving the country within a couple of months its too expensive to swap providers but i have nothing good at all to say about Telstra Big Pond!

I am with Telstra Bigpond over the last 2 years I have signed contract with them for 24 months and I am paying over $90 with only 12Gb download, As Bigpond promise me that I am getting ADSL2+ connection with 20,000kbps speed but never happen I got connect as 8,000kbps but my internet speed always is less than 2,100kbps. I have been told that my internet speed is slow because my exchange cannot support fast connection and they are going to fix this issue within 6 months but it never happened. I had a better internet plan with another internet service provider but now I am paying more and getting less download.

Then don't use BigPond and switch to an ISP with ADSL2+ DSLAMs in your local exchange.

Your connection would be the problem not the service provider, I have been with bigpond for years and only go down down once every few months if that

I'm with bigpond and Telstra recently sent me a letter informing me that they were in the next few months going to upgrade me for free to an ADSL2 plan for the same amount I now pay or I could simply click to upgrade my plan in mybigpond. For the last 5 days I have had no internet, no email, no fax and people need to shoot down the phone to be heard, I run my own business and this is now starting to cause organisational problems and cost me money.
A Telstra rep answered the call while I was typing this, after 45mins waiting, spoke with me for about 10mins telling me that the previous information provided by Telstra reps over 3 previous calls was wrong, he put me on hold and BINGO I am back in the que listening to automated messages again. Great system. My speed is 1kbps listed as the slowest in Australia, at this speed this should load by Christmas 2011.

I have just spoken to a second rep who couldn't help me and did the right thing trying to transfer me to someone who could so after 1hr 45mins I am now back on hold waiting for someone to answer a few questions. I don,t blame the people on the phones it would be a tough job listening to angry people all day, but the phone companies need to stop training them to fob you off with "The problem is at your end" line and actually fix the exchange systems. No wireless reception here, 30mins out of Sydney, although I have been contacted by all the big providers trying to sign me up to it, telling me that I have reception until I inform them I don't and they run a test and appologise and hang up. Typing now through boredom now on hold for 2 hrs.
PS. Previous message "shoot" should be "shout", problem with typing with one hand. LOL. Need a sence of humour when dealing with this.

Well this all started 2 1/2hrs ago and nobody came back to answer my call. Finally an automated message asked me if the information provided was helpful? Was I happy with the service? and I could leave a verbal message. What a crock of ****. Pigpond what a joke ADSL2 is put me back to ADSL and leave me be. Not paying them 1c until this is sorted, any body have the phone number for the communications onsbudsman?

Scotty93, thank you for your post. I wish I had read it before allowing Telstra to upgrade me to ADSL2. I had exactly the same experience as you - no internet for a week. Killing my business and multiple calls (with long waits to answer) to telstra with many admissions that their techs were not following through properly. Telstra admitted that the fault was at their Exchange. The Tesltra staff I dealt with were okay but expressed frustration with other staff or contractors for not following through. Every time I deal with them I have a drama - maybe the CEO (just googled him, his name is David Thodey base salary $2 million) should try doing the same as us!

New Zealand hasn't got faster Broadband then Australia.

Australia's fastest Broadband Speed is 100mbps which is in Melbourne only, other cities such as Perth, sydney and Brisbane have 30mbps.

You might also look to know, Australia has the world's fastest wireless broadband internet in the world at 42mbps which is being upgraded to 84mbps next year, when Telstra upgraded it's wireless network to 14mbps a few years ago it was rated as the fastest wireless network in the world then they upgraded it to 21mbps and now 42mbps and they state they are upgrading it again next year (2011) to 84mbps making it much faster than they wireless internet in the world, also making it among the fastest internet services in the world.

Most of the information on this site is misleading.

Most countries don't have 100mbps of speed, in Australia only Melbourne has 100mbps of speed which is the fastest, therefore they wouldn't have those rates unless the whole of Australia did as there would only be a percentage of people in Victoria using this site.

Your speed is around 14mbps, that is reasonably fast but depends on what service you have???
If you have a Telstra Cable Broadband connection in Melbourne you would get between 60 to 90mbps as Melbourne has 100mbps of speed while other states only have 30mbps, and if your with Telstra Wireless Internet you should get the same as what i'm getting, around what you just stated, my internet is between 6 and 29mbps as it's a 42mbps connection, next year when Telstra upgrade there wireless service again to 84mbps i should get around 10 to 70mbps on Telstra wireless broadband, and you know the good thing, over the past few months Telstra have been lowering there wireless broadband prices, a few months ago they lowered there $119 plan to $89 and added an extra 2GB from 10GB to 12GB, they also lowered there smaller plans and lowered the prices and added more usage, and seeing Telstra keep upgrading there network with faster speeds it's great, but it's only a start, i think when Telstra release it's 84mbps speed next year they'll add more usage to the plans and possibly lower the prices.

And, if your with Optus cable which is 20mbps nationwide then you would get around 2 to 14mbps, but 14mbps if your lucky but being Optus you would be lucky to even get 8mbps with there outdated slow network, and if it's Optus wireless you would be lucky to even get 4mbps.

As for Vodafone, you wont get anymore than 2mbps.

Telstra seems the only providing that's upgrading it's network, i think it's got something to do with the NBN, when the NBN is up and running it's going to be a big mobile competitor to Telstra, so Telstra is getting ready and keeps upgrading so it's ahead of the NBN by heaps.

dude australia isnt the fastest internet in world at all uk has 100mb cable all over the uk australia hasnt its only in 1 state and the wireless network is crap for gaming, america has faster still so has japan and malaysia
australia has the worst internet in the world becuase not only are the dslams out of date so are the exchanges telstra has just been fined $10 million dollars for not leting other service providers use ther exchanges
and the cap system is a rip off u dont get that in other western countrys its just a money spiner for telstra
